Inner West Sydney Suburb Reviews

Renowned for its trendy cafes and formerly-gritty and bohemian leanings, the Inner West of Sydney has undergone wave upon wave of gentrification to greatly ‘clean up’ both its streets and its image. In the present day, this is now a land of up-market terraces, nearly endless quality restaurants covering a huge range of cuisines, dog-friendly parks and convenient public transport connectivity.

Its close proximity to Sydney City makes it highly desirable for commuters and smaller families alike, and along with this desirability has come property prices which have soared. Pretty suburban parks and impressive examples of Victorian architecture abound in the Inner West, although streets are typically narrow and freestanding homes in most of its suburbs are limited to on-street parking.

Typically left-leaning, while it’s changed somewhat the Inner West is still something of a home for the arts, yoga, music and other artistic endeavours. Its array of pubs and breweries offer the prospect to enjoy some of Sydney’s best drops, while cultural diversity and dining is another of its strengths. Each suburb of the Inner West has a different demographic profile, with some hubs of Italian heritage and others dotting in elements of Portuguese, Greek, Vietnamese and more.

As with any region of Sydney, exactly where the ‘Inner West’ truly starts and ends is a matter of debate – the general consensus is Strathfield acting as the unofficial borderline.

Rozelle Suburb Review

Summary: Vibrant, green and absolutely packed with amenities, Rozelle has become a go-to suburb in inner Sydney among families who prefer a bit more action and variety as opposed to peace and quiet. It’s very well-positioned, with the Sydney CBD only a 10 minute drive away, and offers some truly great waterfront views – for those with the wallets to afford them. For pet owners, it’s a suburb that’s hard to beat, and boasts some great parklands in particular. Noise and traffic are its two main downsides, while rising prices haven’t helped matters, either. Drummoyne Suburb Review

Summary: Fringed by water and offering impeccable views throughout, Drummoyne is a scenic part of Sydney where old and new wealth collide. If you’ve ever wanted to feel poor, this is the suburb to visit, as multi-level mansions and freestanding homes on large blocks dominate with some great angles of the Parramatta River.

It’s highly decked out with amenities along Victoria Road and has pleasant public spaces, while its location provides centralised access to other parts of Sydney. Price and traffic are its main negatives, but it’s otherwise a highly desirable place to live. Read Review

Five Dock Suburb Review

By  •  Reviews

Summary: Boasting a lingering Italian influence and with an aspect that mixes together convenience and nature very well, Five Dock is quite distinctive as far as Inner West suburbs go. It’s largely populated by big, low-density freestanding homes with more living space than its peers, it’s highly safe, and its handful of waterfront parks are particularly appealing. Property prices have ballooned with gentrification, traffic isn’t amazing, and it’s a little disconnected from public transport, while aircraft noise can also be a slight factor. Read Review

Rhodes Suburb Review

By  •  Reviews

Summary: A suburb of extreme contrasts, a single street in Rhodes is all that separates one of Sydney’s highest-density concentrations of modern apartment living with light industry and spacious, older freestanding properties right on the waterfront. It’s a spot that continues to see rapid construction which has brought with it an array of restaurants and other amenities, and it’s got nice waterfront parkland areas plus good city connectivity. It’s a bit pricey and noisy, however, and all these modern constructions have made traffic a non-starter. Read Review

Lilyfield Suburb Review

By  •  Reviews

Summary: Lovely Lilyfield is one of the greener suburbs of Sydney’s Inner West, with a pleasant abundance of spacious public parklands, ovals and other outdoor spaces dotted throughout. Its waterfront portion on the Parramatta River is particularly gorgeous, and abuzz with families and singles alike. Its location is also convenient, with the city not far away, and large homes and schools make it family-friendly. Prices are high, it’s a little lacking in amenities, and plane noise are its main cons. Read Review

Leichhardt Suburb Review

By  •  Reviews

Summary: One of Sydney’s true “dining capitals”, Leichhardt is a hub of activity that’s home to some of the city’s best restaurants and cafes. Its longstanding Italian heritage remains obvious, and it boasts one of the most interesting mixes of architecture of any suburb. Despite a lack of a heavy rail station, it’s still very well-serviced by public transport and has a great mix of amenities to offer families as well. Its main downsides are traffic, price, and noise – both at ground level and from the air – that make it an amazing place to visit, but a mixed bag for living. Read Review
